It has been years since I visited the world of Krynn. However, the visit has flooded me with wonderful memories. Epic battles, great characters, and stories that still stick in my mind today. I will always love this world. I had tinkered with worldbuilding before I started reading and playing Dungeons and Dragons in this world.
However, the world sparked the desire to start worldbuilding. My memory was a bit weak on the world. I would like to thank Dragonlance Nexus and Wikipedia for helping me remember more.

I always overthought what a taboo was. I focused on the idea that taboos are these forbidden ideas, but how do you create them. How do these ideas form in a culture? Some, like murder, seem to be universal. However, others will be very culturally specific. Some taboos seem to be old cultural norms.
Yes, and this is the secret that made me realize the true pattern needed to create cultural taboos. They are much more simple than forbidden acts in a culture.

The secret pattern to create taboos original to a fantasy culture
The truth in all of the research I have done is most taboos are really things as small as impolite and end in the death of people break them. And they seem to form up in 4 categories:
Wiki has a great place to start looking at taboos.
You had done all the hard work when you created the history, cultural norms, the state, and the religions of your fantasy world. Join Michael and Jeffery in this podcast episode at they look at the wonderful world of taboos.

If you have followed the show you would not that Jeffery is a huge geek about studying cultures. We have talked about cultures and how they evolve in many ways.
We have even spent time talking about how cultures can form into states in your world. We really just love looking at naturalist ways to fake a world.
As you drill into a fantasy world, you might find that a fictional setting my not seem richly developed. It probably because as cultures even very small cultures usually start coming up with their own inner divisions.
In the world, we live in we often think of subcultures in our own culture. If you are my age you could never forget the jocks versus geek divide in high school. However, we usually do not consider those to be subcultures of the subculture of high school students.
If you get my example above, it might seem apparent why so many only add in the classic fantasy subcultures:
Now, I have nothing against fiction that relies on these tropes. However, the goal of the Worldbuilder’s Anvil is to build more natural looking BS.
A subculture as I define it is a part of a larger culture where enough people share a different set of cultural norms derived from the greater culture. A subculture is larger than a group of people, so large that no individual can completely control the direction it moves and people. People outside of the group who know of would know of it should have heuristic beliefs about the group.
Or more simply, subcultures grow out a culture's population as it food surplus allows for the sophistication grows.
Join Michael and Jeffery in this episode as a look into the basic patterns of subcultures.

Writing is the second most important skill a worldbuilder can know. Curiosity is still the most important skill. Writing is invaluable to a worldbuilder, because you hone your delivery skills and immerse yourself in the world you are creating.
It does not matter what medium you share your work. The benefit comes from the exercise you mind receives when writing down the details of the world. You need not ever share your writing to become a writer. However, if you ever want to share the art of your worldbuilding you need to become a writer.

You only need to do two things to become a writer. Reading and Writing. You need to spend time reading great works. Not as a fan, but you are looking to find how the writer accomplishes. You are just looking for the brushstrokes used by authors to deliver their stories.
I think Jeff Goins summed it up really well in his article, “Why Writers Need to Read if They Want to Be Good”.
If you need to improve your reading comprehension or writing skills, even after you start practicing those skills. Do not give up. Look for others to help you.
Now, I do not believe writers have to be published authors. However, if want to share your content online in any form. You need to add more writing to your routine.
You might want to write novels, short stories, or RPG adventures; or you might want to simply make videos, share art, or do a podcast. All of these types of creatives should write.
However, if you are in the first group. Those people who will deliver their art through the written word. You need to start reading and writing every day. For the rest of you, try do spend some time every week. The only risk to you is exercising your mind.
Now join Michael and Jeffery in this week’s episode action packed episode of the Worldbuilder’s Anvil.
